Friends of the cotswolds

"We are a charity working to protect and enhance the unique environment and heritage of the Cotswolds. We are passionate about making a visible and vibrant difference. The Cotswolds is one of the most beautiful areas in the UK, a place we wish to cherish and nurture"

An opportunity arose in 2011 to purchase the former House of Correction from the Cotswold District Council, who decided to sell the historic Grade II* Listed Georgian building as part of a cost saving exercise.

Following concerns that commercial investors were interested, a group of passionate individuals from both Northleach and the surrounding areas joined forces and formed ‘The Friends of the Cotswolds’, with charity status. They were keen to secure the building's future for locals and visitors and to ensure the site remained open to the public and that it should continue to be protected as a heritage site. In turn the group recognised that The Old Prison had potential to become the head office for the Cotswold National Landscape (formerly the Cotswold Conservation Board).

After purchasing The Old Prison in 2013, the Friends of the Cotswolds have carried out significant structural repairs and improvements over the years and now intend to turn their attention to improving the museum aspect and interpretation on site.
